July 4th Gathering at Jen and Kayla’s

June 27, 2014

In a letter to his wife Abigail just after the signing of the Declaration, John Adams declared that July 4th “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

July 4th falls on a Friday this year, and Kayla and Jen have generously offered to host a gathering at their place to celebrate.  They have a huge backyard where we can grill, make s’mores by the fire, and just hang out.  I think that will at least partially fulfill Adams’ prophecy.

We’ll start at 4:30PM, and fire up the grill at 6PM.  At sunset, we’ll open the Sabbath with a short devotional.

Kayla will have some veggie food on hand, and feel free to bring your favorite summer dish to share.  If you aren’t sure what to bring, you can contact kaylathom[at]gmail[dot]com so she can let you know what items are needed.  Please, please, try to get in touch with her sooner rather than later, as that will make things much easier for her!

I hope to see you all there!

YA Church Potluck Coordination – March 2

February 19, 2013

Hello Everyone!

I hope your start to the week wasn’t too bad 😉

As many of you know, our Young Adults group has signed up to be one of the Spencerville church potluck coordinators. For this year, we will be coordinating the months of March (2nd), August (3rd) and December (7th).  If you would like to help out with decoration, set up, table dismissal, meal coordination and all the other duties we have during potluck, please take note of the months and plan to be there 🙂 From our past experiences I think we’ve learned that we can never have enough helping hands; all willing to help are more than welcome!

For the month of March we will have a themed potluck celebrating Irish-American Heritage month. I think that’s going to be a lot of fun, as themed potlucks always are 🙂 Potluck will be on Sabbath, March 2nd and we’re planning to meet at our Sabbath School room (front fellowship room, next to kitchen) at 11:00am to start setting up. Potluck starts at around 12:30pm (maybe 12:45pm) so even if you arrive later on we can still use your help to serve the dishes and stuff.

If you would like to help out with decorations and/or have any questions, please contact us at spencervillecya@gmail.com.  I hope to see a lot of you guys there, as we really need all the help we can get. This is a great opportunity to serve our church so if you don’t have any other lunch plans, please join us and share in on a great meal! 🙂

Blesssings,

Cecilia

Super Bowl viewing party, Feb. 3 at Rob’s

January 29, 2013

Folks, this is Brother vs. Brother, West Coast vs. East Coast, Flash vs. Working Class, do I need to go on?  If you’re not pumped up for this game…well…I’ve heard rumors that Destiny’s Child will be reuniting for a halftime performance.  Does that help?

I’m hosting a Super Bowl viewing party this Sunday at my parents’ place (Email me at r.e.fuller@gmail.com for the address).  Kickoff is at 6:30 PM.  Try to arrive by 6 PM so you can get a plate of food together and find an optimal viewing position in time to watch Alicia Keys sing the National Anthem.

I’ll be cooking a few things, and I’ve asked (begged) Cecilia to make some homemade pizzas again.  So, there should be a good bit of food on hand.  If you feel inclined to bring a over a drink or snack item, it would be much appreciated.  I have a weak spot for football-themed desserts.

I’ll leave you with this: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-presents/0ap2000000130518/NFL-Films-Presents-How-a-Harbaugh-coaches

See you there!

Soccer fun to kick off the fall season on Sunday Sept 30th

September 18, 2012

Hello friends,

I’ve tracked down our favorite soccer coach Patrick Edouard to join us on the last day of this month (Sun Sept 30th) for some “soccer madness” (as one of u called it previously)

Here’re more details:

Time: 9AM – Noon, this is just a general estimate, feel free to stay and play into the afternoon
Skill level: all levels – i think all of us during the previous games were either non-player or beginner
Location: South Germantown Recreation Park, located in Boyds, MD. Google Map of the park | Official website

Bring:
Soccer ball/shoes if you have those, otherwise just comfortable shoes, shorts, and some warm jackets for after the game.

About food:
I noticed from past experience that people like to bring (and eat) food to this kind of events, well let’s do that again this time. Feel free to bring anything delicious to share if you like to, otherwise there’re lots of deli and shops nearby, including a very tasty deli/bakery 🙂

This soccer event is very casual, I hope that you can come and join us for some refreshing fall air, good company and food, and lots of open space!

Sunday brunch social at Calvin’s – Aug 26th

August 24, 2012

Hello friends,

In light of Calvin’s coming trip and the spirit of August, Calvin will be hosting one last summer cook-out/social this Sunday (August 26th) at his house. His preliminary schedule for this event is as follows:

10AM: Insanity Workout (from the same people that brought you the other well-known intense workout program P90X)
11AM: Cook-out (feel free to bring pre-cooked foods also if that’s more convenient for you)
Afternoon: Swimming pool and whatnot

Feel free to come to any segment of this day-event, although I highly recommend being there at 10AM for Insanity, it’s a good way to try-out this workout program without any formality or pressure. If that’s too much for you, at least bring swimwear for the pool after lunch.

So come over to share your cooking expertise and your smiles (or tears if you come for the workout also, j/k), and bring your friends too!

Potluck at Rob’s in Virginia this Sabbath June 9

June 6, 2012

Hey everyone, I thought it was about time I had you folks back to my place in Arlington.

Directions and info to follow.  It would be great if we could start around 2:30 PM or so.  It’ll take some time to get to VA from church.  It’ll work best if you arrange things so you can leave directly from church.  So bring a change of clothes.  Also, carpooling is recommended since you’ll have to park on the street.

Maybe in the afternoon we can take a walk or something around DC or Crystal City.

I’m going to try to make 3 or 4 things myself.  Anything else you guys can bring would be greatly appreciated.  Bringing food is not a requirement, though.  If you don’t have time to get something together, just come out and have fun.

Call me at 301-704-4810 if you need directions or anything.  See you guys soon!

Cookout/potluck at Calvin’s this coming Sabbath, June 2nd

May 31, 2012

Shawn and Calvin will be having a cookout at Calvin’s house on the 2nd of June 2012. (Please email/comment for address)

The cookout will begin at 1:45pm and this will give you ample time to head home from church to get changed and grab whatever you will need to aid in your dish.

I have a few dishes but if you would like to bring your precooked dish in case there are too many people cooking this will also be ok. Also if you have precooked meals there shall be less time spent cooking and more on hanging out eating 🙂

Since I do not know what you need as far as tools, please give me a call and I shall be happy to answer any questions.

There is no closing time at this place and you are more than welcome to sleep over should you want to. If you do plan to sleepover please let me know in advance 🙂

It is not a requirement to cook something so if you are not able to, please just come and hang out. There will be fun activities after the meal, maybe

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you all there.

-Calvin

Just FYI I plan to actually cook there so I’ll be there early, here are some of the dishes I’ll be preparing: fried rice (vegetarian), beltfish, mushroom mix (vegan), roasted chinese broccoli and other greens (vegan), and a tofu side dish (vegan)
